Harry Stewart grew up in New York City where, during World War II, he enlisted in the US Army Air Corps as an aviation cadet. He completed fight training at Tuskegee Air Field in Alabama and was awarded his wings and commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant while still a teenager.

After tactical combat fighter training at Walterboro Army Air Field in South Carolina, Stewart was sent to Italy to serve in the 332nd Fighter Group. He flew 43 bomber escort missions with the 15th Air Force and was credited with destroying three enemy aircraft in aerial combat. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross as well as the Air Medal with six Oak Leaf Clusters.

After returning to the US, Stewart further distinguished himself as a member of the wining team in the 1949 Gunnery Meet held at Nellis AFB, Nevada.

After being discharged, Stewart returned to his hometown and attended New York University, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He maintained his affiliation with the Air Force Reserve and eventually retired a Lieutenant Colonel.

In his civilian life, Stewart retired as Vice President of ANR Pipeline Company, a major interstate natural gas consortium.

Stewart still enjoys flying and frequently flies neighborhood kids around in his Schweizer motorglider. He and his wife of 60 years, Delphine, live in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. The couple has a daughter, Lori, who lives in Pacific Palisades, California.
